How To Choose A Water Feature

    Last updated 16 days ago

At the Outdoor Décor Company in Perth, we have a wide variety of water features available at our Malaga showroom, but choosing the one you like the look of the most is not the only consideration that you need to make. Here’s what else you need to know.

Tips for picking a water feature

One of the first things that should be considered when choosing a water feature is where you want it to be located. Where you will put it will often inform what type of water feature is most suitable, as well as its size. Consider the space you have available and choose something proportional to the garden.

A large back garden with a sizeable lawn, for instance, is perfect for a large fountain. Smaller, less formal looking garden, on the other hand, might be better suited for a small pond.

If you choose a fountain, avoid a windy location so that the water does not drain away by being blown over the side of the feature. Also avoid placing the feature too close to trees – especially deciduous trees – or you could have an endless leaf problem.

Decide if you need to add lighting and, given the location, if you will be able to see the lights clearly at night.

Lastly, if the water feature is large enough, you can add your own choice of aquatic plants and stones to match other features already in your garden.

    Tips For Repotting Plants

    Last updated 24 days ago

Unless you deliberately want to restrict its growth, a plant will need to be repotted into a larger pot once it has outgrown its current pot. It is always a best practice to choose a pot that is just one size larger than the one it is already in. This is a good general practice, as plants that are used to being restricted won’t always adapt well to pots that are too much larger.

In order to ensure that the plant sits at the same height in the soil in the new pot, you should lay a little soil in the bottom. Make sure you use a soil that already has fertiliser mixed with it, so that you don’t have to fertilise the plant separately.

Once removing the plant from its old pot you can teases out the roots, and place it into the larger pot, on top of the soil. As a guide, the soil level at the top of the root system should not be right at the top of the pot, otherwise water won’t be absorbed but will run over the lip of the pot.

You should then pack soil loosely around the edges of the roots. It’s important not to pack this in too tightly, as this will push the air out of the soil. You should then water the pot until it comes out the bottom of the pot.

How To Mosquito-Proof Your Water Feature

    Last updated 28 days ago

A water feature can be an attractive addition to almost any garden. Unfortunately, water often means mosquitoes, so it’s important to ensure your water feature is set up in a way that will not encourage them to breed.

    Keeping Mosquitoes At Bay

The best way to mosquito-proof your water feature will depend on the design of the feature; however, as a general principle mosquitoes like still, stagnant water, so this is what you need to avoid.

If your water feature includes a fountain, ensure this is kept flowing. A fountain can also be a great addition to a pond or pool that would otherwise be stagnant. Where possible, set the fountain up in such a way that it keeps all the water in the pond constantly agitated, so there are no still corners for mosquitoes to breed in.

Fish can be another way to prevent a pond or the basin of a large water feature from stagnating. Among others, goldfish are suitable for this. As well as keeping the water constantly moving, fish will eat wrigglers and scum that can form on the water’s surface, preventing mosquito populations from developing. If you choose this option, be careful not to overfeed the fish, or they won’t control the mosquitoes but will focus on the fish food instead.

If you have a small birdbath as a garden feature, it is likely that neither of these options will be suitable. In this case, be sure to change the water regularly (if it does not evaporate as a matter of course), and clean off any slime or scum that develops on the feature each time.
