How To Grow Roses In Pots

Last updated 3 months ago

Brighten up your outdoor space to no end with the addition of gorgeous roses in pots. Perfect whether you have a paved garden or you’re looking for some decorative displays to add a little extra interest to your flowerbeds, pots bursting with sweet scented roses are an excellent choice for many gardens – and they may be easier to grow than you think.

Choosing Your Pot

Most roses can be successfully grown in lightweight planters, apart from some large climbers, so you’ll have plenty of different breeds to choose from. Once you’ve decided on your type of rose, you’ll need to choose your container. This must be large enough to provide plenty of space for the roots and it needs to offer good drainage.

Where To Place Your Rose Pot

Roses need a fair amount of light and good air circulation, so avoid cramming your pots into corners and space them at least two feet apart. You’ll also want to stay away from placing them in the shade.

Ensuring the Soil is Right

Because roses tend to deplete the nutrients in soil more quickly in pots than they do in the ground, it’s best to use rich soil and to put a layer of rocks or gravel at the bottom of your pot to promote drainage and stop the soil from becoming too compressed.

Replanting

After a few years, your rose may begin to outgrow its initial pot and you will need to replant it in a larger one to give it space to continue thriving.
